SO. I've passed the dreaded qualifying examination. As was foretold by the countless waves of PhD students that crashed against the breakwaters, it was a most harrowing experience. But fear not, intrepid explorers, for the greatest fear that one has stems from not understanding the attitudes that your examiners have in the administration of the exam. Once you realise that questions are asked from the point view of reaching a mutual understanding (with you obviously having to travel further to get there!), then this fear diminishes (yes, it remains, but at a diminished to a level that you can function).
